Andy’s Quick Hits (110): Proven — Men are Just as Emotional as Women!

Well, you’d better! And you’re giving away your assumptions and conscious biases!

Well how do we know this?
A group of researchers around Alexander Weigard at the University of Michigan decided to measure this and followed 175 men and women over 75 days. They controlled for women who were on different forms of contraceptives (with the presumption that natural hormonal fluctuations my influence emotionality) and measured emotions in three different ways. So pretty structured and comprehensive.

And what did they find?
They found basically no difference between men and women and between women on, or not on, different contraceptives.

So we’re all equally emotional!
Indeed. We know there are inter-personal differences but this is the same irrespective of sex.

But women still get emotional about different things, don’t they?!
Well, yes. The research is not focusing on what makes you emotional but the general emotional roller coaster is similar, on average, across sexes.
