Andy’s Quick Hits (29): Owl or Lark? New evidence for personality traits of early or late risers.

I’m a bit of an owl — generally preferring to go to bed later and get up a bit later. I’ve trained myself over the years to be a bit more larkish, with some reasonable success, but left to my own devices I find my sleep pattern creeping ever later.

These sleep patterns, known as chronotypes, have been well researched and seem to be genetically driven. Some of us are simply larkish, early to bed and early to rise, and some of us are just owlish, late to bed and late to rise. So claiming that getting up early is a good thing is only confirming the bias you have because of your chronotpye.

Recent research out of the University of Warwick in the UK adds to the body of research also conducted on the personality types of these chronotypes but combines this with large scale genetic analysis

What traits are associated with Owls and Larks?

  • Larks are reported as being higher on conscientiousness
  • Larks are particularly more self-disciplined (a facet of the above conscientiousness)
  • Larks are reported as being lower on openness (open for new experiences)
  • Larks are also less agreeable
  • Larks are also less excitement…
