Seems like political standpoints lead us to bend, or break, our own morals.
Well, politics is politics!
Indeed, but the question Kyle Hull et al. of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln wanted to answer was how do our moral judgements change according to political stances.
Well, all politicians lie — currently some politicians seem to lie a lot more than others, though! Is this a surprise?!
Indeed, but let’s not just blame the politicians, this research asked 2’472 people about nonpolitical and political moral behavior and nonpolitical and political moral tolerance. So it’s about “normal” people and how they view and tolerate moral and immoral behaviour.
Oh, intriguing. And what did they find?
Well, the results were quite troubling. According to Kyle Hull:
“People, regardless of age or ideology, were more willing to engage in immoral behaviors and judgments if the behaviors were in the political realm,… And a lot of it was just driven by genuine internal dislike of the ‘other’ side.”
Oh dear, and this is for everyone?
Simply, everyone was asked the same questions but sometimes instead of the word person…
