How AI changes roles and demands different skills but also increases the need for very human abilities also
So isn’t AI going to replace middle managers?
Well, probably not any time soon — but who knows. AI though is best suited to doing routine tasks requiring large amounts of information that is hard or tedious for human beings. So actually this should enable higher productivity.
I am planning a deeper review of AI and the workplace — but this recently study published by Jonna Koponen of the University of Eastern Finland caught my eye because it showed some of the complexities of AI and how it can be perceived and used differently. Ironically it can make middle managers roles more challenging!
How so?
Well, on one hand productivity can grow but this means the pace of work and progress also grows. This also means constantly learning new things and keeping up to date, so this is one challenge. Another is that using AI changes work processes and these also need to be managed. And some other routine tasks are added such as monitoring and checking AI.
But what is also fascinating was the relationship to AI in this study.
